Start the new year--and the new decade--with style that fits your needs!

The tradition of making (and breaking) New Year’s resolutions is inspiring for some people. For others, well … it’s just one more to-do list that they’re never going to get to.

The secret to staying inspired, instead of getting tired? Make a plan! Over at Hardwood Specialties in Morristown, we’re experts at helping you make a home renovation plan. Following through on one good thing--like upgrading your home--can lead to other good things. Read on to see what we mean.

How to make resolutions that stick.

It’s a classic: make the resolution to lose twenty pounds, or exercise more, or eat better, and by February first you’re picking up the phone to order in pizza, while your new exercise gear gathers dust in the back of the closet.

We hear you. It’s exhausting to stick with goals long-term, especially when you work, have to get the kids to and from school, take care of parents and spouses and friends, and, oh, don’t forget that you volunteered to help out at the church spaghetti supper!

But what if you turned it all around by giving your home a tune-up? Hear us out! Studies show that your surroundings affect your mindset. We found four of the most common New Year’s resolutions, and thought about ways improving your home environment can help you achieve them.

  • Trying to eat better? Make your kitchen a haven for your budding chef skills. Add under-cabinet lighting so food prep is so pretty, it’s Instagram-ready. (Bonus: all those Instagram posts will inspire your friends and family to eat well, too, so now you’ll be a good influence!)

  • Need inspiration for regular exercise? Turn the family den into a workout room. Add a rack for weights, position the TV so you can twist, turn, kettle-bell and step like a pro, without breaking anything! Paint the walls a vibrant, inviting color, so you’ll want to be there.

  • Trying to reduce stress? Focus on the master bedroom and bath. It’s easy to add underfloor heating and spa-like touches to your bathroom, when Hardwood Specialties is your partner. Updated lighting, fresh paint and new pillows will make your bedroom a soothing sanctuary.

  • Want more family time in the new year? Focus on the living room/family room. How will you and your loved ones spend time there? If you want to start a regular game night, add a low coffee table and some floor pillows. Worried about spilled drinks or snacks, or furry friends getting over-excited? Ask an expert at Hardwood Specialties for advice on the hard-working floors you need.

Our favorite 2020 New Year’s Resolutions:

We looked around on the internet for what other people listed as their 2020 New Year’s resolutions. These four are our favorites.

  1. This one made us laugh: Buy a fake plant. You might have a green thumb, but if you’re a plant killer, then maybe you need a nice, plastic succulent to set the mood in your home. There’s no shame in that.

  2. Read more books. This one pairs perfectly with wintertime hygge.

  3. Be a better person. We think our tips for improving your home environment will get you well on your way to this one!

  4. Actually do your New Year’s resolutions. That’s always the hard part, isn’t it?
